Yoga philosophy beyond the mat
Swami Govindananda, known as Swami Ji, is the founder of Ji Living. He is widely known for his ability to skilfully communicate profound philosophical subjects in an accessible, humorous, and appealing way that arouses others in their spiritual journey. Swami Ji also inspires through example, embodying positive spirituality and showing how we can move towards fulfilling our highest potential.
Meeting his Guru
Swami Govindananda was born in New Zealand in 1953. In 1975 he met a senior Swami of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Maharaj who was visiting New Zealand from India. This was Swami Ji’s introduction to the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga.
Swami Ji travelled to India where he accepted Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, known as Shri Maharaj Ji, as his spiritual Guru.
Swami Ji lived in Shri Maharaj Ji’s ashram for a number of years, practising meditation and philosophy, under his Guru’s guidance, at the deepest levels. In 1987 he became the first ever Caucasian Swami of Shri Maharaj Ji, and in 1989, following the wishes of his Guru, left India to help others learn and experience the mysteries of the self.
Dedicated to his Guru’s message of pure Divine love, Swami Ji regularly tours Australasia and other parts of the world with his gifted kirtanist and assistant Carmen, giving intimate talks and large presentations to inspire people to begin their own journey of self-discovery. In 1990, he established the Bhakti Meditation Centre Ltd., an Australian registered charitable organisation and the Australasian arm of his Guru’s worldwide organisation, with branches in Adelaide, Sydney Melbourne and Auckland.
Swami Ji is based in northern Sydney. His online talks, DVDs, home meditation programs and writings aim to widen his audience so that as many people as possible may be empowered and inspired to the wondrous potential of human life.
